Ethical Touchstones

Smooth stones marked with a gold touchstone streak

The Ethical Touchstones of Contours of Tomorrow are practical reference points for guiding action in a complex, changing world. Each touchstone connects to one of the five CoT lenses, offering both a philosophical frame and a way to translate reflection into everyday choices. They are meant to be reflected on, practiced, and adapted over time, evolving as we do and as circumstances change.

Empathy (Flow)

Seek to understand the experiences and feelings of others before acting. The lens of Flow reminds us that life moves in currents and rhythms, and that our actions ripple outward. Empathy helps us navigate the currents of human experience, noticing how our choices affect others and adjusting our approach accordingly.

Integrity (Order)

Align your words, actions, and values consistently, even when it’s difficult. Order provides structure in a world of complexity. Integrity creates internal stability, giving you a reliable foundation for decision-making and a clear reference point when pressures pull you in multiple directions.

Respect (Space)

Honor the dignity, boundaries, and perspectives of everyone, even when they differ from your own. The lens of Space emphasizes context and perspective. Respect allows others the room to exist, grow, and thrive, acknowledging that each person’s environment and limits matter in shaping their experience.

Responsibility (Emergence)

Take ownership of your choices and their consequences, and repair what you can. Emergence reminds us that patterns and outcomes arise from the interaction of many forces. Responsibility recognizes your role in shaping these patterns and contributing to the outcomes of communities, organizations, and shared systems.

Growth (Persistence)

Commit to continual learning, reflection, and improvement, for yourself and for the shared future. Persistence ensures that knowledge, skills, and values endure. Growth allows ideas and actions to extend beyond the immediate moment, ensuring that contributions continue to evolve over time.

These touchstones are not fixed or absolute. They are starting points, practical ways to bring reflection into action and to help choices align with the contours you wish to shape in your life and in the shared world. Use them as a guide, adapt them to your circumstances, and let them evolve as you do.

Reflective Questions

The questions below are meant to be used as moments of pause rather than problems to solve. They are prompts for reflection, journaling, or quiet consideration, and can be taken one at a time or revisited over time. There is no expectation to answer all of them, or to answer them the same way twice. They exist to help bring the Ethical Touchstones into daily practice, gently and without obligation.

Empathy (Flow)

  • How might my actions affect the people around me today?
  • Have I taken the time to understand someone else’s perspective before responding?
  • Where could I notice the currents of emotion or need that I usually overlook?

Integrity (Order)

  • Are my words and actions aligned with my values right now?
  • When facing a difficult choice, what would consistency require of me?
  • Where in my life could I strengthen the structures that support clear, honest action?

Respect (Space)

  • How am I honoring the boundaries and dignity of others in this situation?
  • Whose perspective have I not yet considered that might change my approach?
  • Where could I create more room for others to contribute or exist without interference?

Responsibility (Emergence)

  • What consequences of my actions might I be overlooking?
  • How can I take ownership of past choices and repair what’s within my power?
  • In what ways do my actions influence larger patterns or systems around me?

Growth (Persistence)

  • What did I learn today that I can carry forward into the future?
  • How am I ensuring that my knowledge, skills, or values endure beyond the immediate moment?
  • Where could I challenge myself to stretch, reflect, or improve in a way that benefits both me and others?
